Scenario #10: 4th Grade Teacher

My class is currently studying Native American history so I had a guest speaker come in
to talk about several Native American tribes. My students are integrating art and history
as they make native art in the style of one of the tribes we’re studying.

Technology Spectrum: None mentioned (apparently someone didn't read the instructions!).

Learning spectrum: I got nuthin'.

Rigor/relevance: Again, the description of the assignment is incomplete, so it's difficult to place this scenario on the chart. At least students are able to use their own artistic talents, rather than just looking at examples. More vehement advocates of art might say that the assignment is cross-discipline, as art speaks a language all its own.

Recommendations: Remember that art is not just visual and two-dimensional. Encourage students to learn words in a native language, and steps to traditional dances. Discover how that art has been integrated into standard American life. Interview, via the web and Skype, members of Native American tribes.
