Scenario #3: 2nd Grade Teacher

My students love computers! We have many education computer games that students use on a regular basis in my classroom when they’re finished with their bookwork. One of our classroom computers is even online!

***

Technology sprectrum: I'm tempted to place this scenario in the Technology Literacy Uses category simply based on the teacher's apparent giddiness over having one computer online (!). Although it's impossible to know more about the "education computer games" in the scenario, if we assume they are content-specific, we can be generous and place this scenario in the Adapting Use category.

***

Learning spectrum: Computer games are used to reward (and maybe occupy?) students after they've finished their "real" work. <insert frowny-face emoticon here>

***

Rigor/relevance: There's not much information here -- we don't really know how the students are using computers, or for what subjects.

***

Recommendation: Before the students can benefit from technology, the teacher must become more familiar with it. The comment about one computer being online leads me to believe that computer use is rare and fleeting, which makes me wonder about the overall rigor of the curriculum.
