I can set up a variety of quizzes and surveys for formative assessment purposes. Many of the online quiz and survey sites offer free options, but if I'm truly concerned about security, I'll need to invest a few dollars. If I'm using a Learning Mangement Systems to operate my course, odds are that it has its own built-in quiz tool.

Clicker tools (classroom response systems)

If I'm working in a traditional classroom setting, I can get instant feedback from my students via a Classroom Response System (clickers). This article from the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching gives an excellent overview of the technology and tools.
