Tools for ASSURE

The ASSURE model of instructional design strives to "systematically plan lessons that effectively integrate classroom use of technology and media" (Smalldino, Lowther & Russell, 2012). While the model is designed for the K-12 school environment, I can easily adjust it to work for my online university-level course, "Promotions and Public Relations in the Equine Industry."

There are dozens of good digital tools that will assist me in following the ASSURE model, and helping my students get the most out of the course. The web site, along with the VideoScribe animation found here, aggregates some of the most useful tools.

A Analyze learners: Do I know what previous knowledge my students are bringing to my course? Do I know how my students learn?
Tools for analyzing learners
S State standards & objectives: While there are no state or national objectives I must meet, I have several industry-specific objectives that I can address.
Tools for stating standards & objectives
S Select strategies, technology, media & materials: I must select tools which will help me tie together my students' current state and my end goals for them.
Tools for selecting strategies
U Utilize technology, media & materials: I've previewed and prepared my teaching tools. Now I need to get out there and use them!
Tools for teaching
R Require learner participation: I want to engage my students! I can help them become self-directed learners, and encourage collaborative activities.
Tools for participation
E Evaluate & revise: Did my plan work? Are there missing elements? Are my students able to perform as expected?
Tools for evaluation
